About this work
An open hand rises from the lower edge of the canvas, fingers spread as slender green vine stems twist around and through them, blossoming into clusters of white roses with loose petals and leaves scattered near the wrist. The flowering vines spread outward to fill the upper two-thirds of the composition, set against a flat, uninterrupted gold field.
Paint is built up thickly on the blossoms and leaves in loose, textured strokes, while the hand is modeled more smoothly in warm flesh tones with soft grey shadows. The gilded ground is laid nearly flat, giving the image a decorative glow that heightens the strangeness of a body sprouting flowers, producing a quiet, dreamlike stillness.
