About this work
A dense bouquet of white roses, some fully open and one drooping past its peak, is gathered in a clear glass jar of water. The flowers fill most of the canvas, their pale petals set against a near-black background, while the reflective glass and a dark red tabletop surface anchor the arrangement at the base of the composition.
Paint is applied thickly and loosely, with confident, textured strokes building up the petals in creamy whites, pale yellows, and touches of pink, leaving the dark ground largely unmodulated. Light seems to fall from one side, picking out the topmost blooms while the lower flowers sink into shadow. The strong tonal contrast and vigorous brushwork give the still life a dramatic presence.
