About this work
A man wrapped in a striped cloak is caught in mid-leap or fall just above a mass of breaking, foam-crested waves, arms raised over his head and one bare foot trailing in the spray. Dozens of white gulls fill the sky around him, wings spread in every direction, against a pale pink and lavender sunrise or sunset.
The sea is built from thick, rhythmic strokes of turquoise, teal and white that mimic the churn of the waves, while the gulls are dabbed in with quick, light touches of white and grey. The warm sky contrasts with the cool water, and the airborne figure amid wheeling birds and turbulent sea gives the picture an intense, almost dreamlike sense of motion.
