Flamberg

A group of robed, long-bearded elders stands clustered together in a forest clearing, one leaning on a long staff, another gripping a curved bow or crook. Behind them a pole topped with a caduceus-like emblem rises among bare trees. To the left, a bare-chested figure kneels with one arm raised overhead and the other stretched toward the group, while a low animal shape crouches at the right edge of the scene.

Worked in charcoal with dense cross-hatching, the drawing builds deep shadow in the robes and beards while leaving the raised arm and upper background comparatively light, drawing the eye across the composition. Long diagonal strokes suggest tangled branches and undergrowth surrounding the figures. The tightly packed grouping, gestural hands, and dramatic contrast of dark drapery against pale skin give the scene a tense, theatrical charge.
