About this work
Two curved, tapering shapes suggestive of fish lie head to tail near the center of the canvas, one pale cream with dark markings, the other darker with a visible eye and gill-like lines. Scraps bearing rows of printed characters appear at the upper right, and a loosely drawn sun or flower shape sits at the lower right against the bright yellow field.
Heavy impasto in cream, ochre, grey and rust builds the fish forms against the flat yellow ground, accented with patches of blue and magenta. Thick, knife-applied paint, scratched outlines and collage-like text fragments give the composition a raw, tactile, faintly surreal energy.
