About this work

Two massive rock walls rise on either side of a narrow channel of water that threads back into a pale, misty horizon. The cliffs are streaked from top to bottom with pale runnels, suggesting meltwater or snow clinging to dark stone, while a low spit of land crosses the foreground at the bottom of the canvas.

A cold range of deep blues and blackish greens covers most of the surface, broken only by a patch of raw gold leaf in the lower left corner. Thick, ridged brushwork models the rock like relief carving, and the narrow, plunging perspective gives the fjord a brooding, monumental scale.
