About this work
A stone fountain sprays water from a shell-shaped basin held by a seated figure at the center of a garden pond, which reflects a long pink-toned arcaded gallery and pale palace facade. A man and woman in powdered wigs and period costume walk hand in hand at the water's edge, framed by red, orange and green autumn shrubs.
Non-naturalistic color dominates: the water and paths glow pink, the grass and bushes are cool teal, set against warm autumn reds and yellows. Flat, simplified shapes with crisp outlines replace blended modeling, giving the garden a stylized, storybook calm.
