About this work
Viewed from an elevated position, the composition unfolds in horizontal bands: a pale river or lake edge in the foreground, then a valley of subdivided fields in yellow, green and ochre, a cluster of red-roofed houses and a church spire at the middle distance, and layered hills receding into blue-grey haze. Trees and hedgerows mark field boundaries, while a scattering of houses climbs a distant slope.
Flat, poster-like planes of gouache build the scene without blended transitions, each field rendered as a single hue bordered by darker outline strokes. Cool blues and violets dominate the sky and distance, warmed by ochre and rust in the cultivated land, giving an airy, sunlit calm to the wide view.
