About this work
A turbulent sky of piled grey-white clouds occupies most of the canvas, pressing down on a low horizon lined with dark trees and a scatter of small rooftops and outbuildings. In the foreground a plowed field shows alternating strips of green grass and brown tilled earth running back toward the distant village.
The palette is almost monochrome grey-green, warmed only by the ochre and green of the field. Thick, directional impasto brushstrokes build the churning clouds, while flat, even light leaves no cast shadow. The heavy, weighty texture gives the landscape a brooding, dramatic atmosphere.
