About this work
A dense cluster of figures fills the sheet: at the top a crowned, bejeweled character surrounded by reaching hands and a dark bird shape, below a snarling animal muzzle emerges from a patterned red panel, and in the foreground two robed women stand with heads bowed or covered, one in a patterned shawl. Decorative red squares with stylized faces and geometric motifs are woven between the figures like fabric or icons.
Worked in pencil and oil on textured paper, the drawing stays largely in grisaille sepia and grey, with passages of brick red picking out the ornamental panels and costume details. The layered, overlapping outlines and unfinished, sketch-like handling give the scene a crowded, mysterious, storybook atmosphere.
