About this work

A round wooden table stands in an overgrown garden between two bare, knotted trees; an owl perches low on the trunk at left. On the table, an antique balance scale holds a red apple in one pan and a green striped melon in the other, flanked by dried roots and sawn log rounds, with dilapidated wooden farm buildings visible through the bushes behind.

The scene is painted almost entirely in muted greys and greens, with the red apple and touches of orange in the melon standing out as the only warm color notes. Fine, detailed brushwork renders the bark, roots and weeds with near-graphic precision, while the overcast light and desaturated palette give the still life a quiet, melancholic stillness.
