About this work
A row of weathered wooden houses and sheds lines the far bank, with the domes and spire of a distant church rising above the rooftops among trees. A single reddish-brown cow stands knee-deep at the water's edge, and the whole scene, houses, grass and animal, is mirrored in the rippling pond below.
Warm golden light picks out the timber walls and sunlit grass, set against the cool teal-blue of the water, built up with thick, textured strokes and knife-applied highlights. The bright reflections and quiet cow give the village scene a calm, end-of-day stillness.
