Evening in the Lopukhin garden

A huge, dark-canopied tree dominates the composition, its dense foliage almost black against patches of bright sky glimpsed through the leaves. Small figures rest in the shadow beneath: two sit together on a low wall, another stands nearby, and a further figure sits apart to the left. Sunlit ground stretches away to the right, dappled with strong white highlights.

The palette is dominated by deep blacks, greens, and browns in the shadowed foliage, broken by sudden bursts of near-white light where the sun breaks through onto the path. Brushwork is loose and painterly, blocking in large dark shapes rather than fine leaf detail. The contrast between deep shadow and bright light gives the scene a hushed, secretive summer stillness.
