About this work
A standing man in a suit, seen from the side with one hand raised, addresses a loosely sketched panorama of trees, rooftops and a radiant star or sun. Below him a group of seated figures gathers around a plate of food: a bald, bespectacled man with an exaggerated grin, two companions in checked and plain jackets, and a shadowy figure at the edge rendered in solid black.
Fine, nervous pencil-like etched lines build the trees and architecture into a hazy backdrop, while the foreground figures are drawn with quicker, cartoonish contours. Tonal contrast is soft throughout, with only the dark silhouette anchoring the composition. The mix of caricature and loose sketching gives the print a light, whimsical, faintly satirical mood.
