About this work
A snowy dooryard framed by tall bare birches leads back toward a cluster of log cabins and a wooden porch with carved railings on the right. Patches of blue meltwater show through the trampled snow in the foreground, and a small red-clad figure is visible in the middle distance near the houses.
Thick impasto strokes, laid on with a palette knife, build up snow, bark and rooftops in white, lilac, ochre and blue-grey. Warm, low sunlight rakes across the trunks and the wooden porch, giving the frozen dooryard a lived-in, rural warmth despite the season's chill.
