About this work
A dense stand of tall fireweed fills the composition, their fluffy, cotton-like seed heads curling and twisting above a thick carpet of green and teal grasses. The stalks lean and cross at varied angles, as if stirred by wind, with a low, hazy horizon barely visible in the distance.
Thick impasto, laid on with a palette knife, builds ridges of pigment in the twisting white seed-tufts and dark red stems. A warm orange-yellow sky glows behind deep greens and blue-green shadows in the grass, and the vigorous, textured brushwork gives the whole scene a vibrant, energetic charge.
