About this work
A fantastical creature combining a long-necked, beaked bird's head with a large scaled fish body curves across the composition, its fins rendered in overlapping red, gold and green segments. Small green fruit shapes and a yellow blossom sit within the patterned ground. A fork and knife appear at the lower corners, as if the creature were laid out on a table.
Worked in mixed media on gold and crimson grounds, the surface divides into textured, mosaic-like panels giving an ornamental, jewel-like richness. Scales and feathers are picked out in fine linear detail against broader stamped fields. The pairing of a dreamlike hybrid animal with plain cutlery lends the small work a quietly surreal humor.
