About this work
A bearded man stands nearly frontal with his weight shifted onto one leg, the other trailing behind him. His raised arm grips a long pole near the top of the sheet while his other hand steadies the same pole at hip level, a length of cloth knotted loosely around his waist; his head turns and tilts down, brow furrowed in concentration.
Worked in monochrome tones on toned paper, the study models the torso and limbs with dense directional strokes and broad blocks of shadow, the ground left loosely scumbled around the figure. Strong side lighting carves deep shadow along the ribs and thigh, and the pose reads as taut and physically forceful, typical of an academic life study.
