About this work
A tall double door fills the canvas frame to frame, its six recessed panels bordered by heavy carved moulding. The upper two panels hold dark reddish-brown fields, while the four lower panels are pale and mottled, scarred with cracks, drips and stains as if decades of use have worn the paint away.
Built up in acrylic with passages of oil pastel scraped and rubbed into the surface, the palette stays within ivory, ochre and burnt umber, lit evenly with no cast shadow. Thick impasto ridges and scratched lines give the flat wood a tactile, almost sculptural surface, producing a quiet, meditative sense of time and decay.
