About this work
A heavily muscled bearded man twists in agony on a burning pyre laid over a lion's pelt, one arm raised, flames rising behind him. To the left a nude youth stands by a tree, bow and arrows at his feet, hands pressed to his own head. On the right a woman in a green mantle leans her head on her hand while two children cling to her; above, four winged infants drift through the smoky sky.
Hot oranges and reds dominate the fire and flesh tones, set against a cooler blue sky, with strong academic modeling and smooth, glossy brushwork. The exaggerated musculature, theatrical lighting and diagonal composition build a dramatic, tragic intensity.
