About this work
An ornately carved stucco frame encloses a family group: a father in dark clothing holds an artist's palette and brush behind a mother with long wavy hair, while three children stand in front of them, one clutching a striped rag doll. Around the frame, in what reads as the actual studio space, sit jars of paint, a cup of brushes, a small icon panel and a framed landscape sketch.
The framed portrait is painted in deep teal and navy tones against the pale ornamental stonework, while the surrounding still life is rendered in warmer, chalky pastel dabs of blue, pink and ochre. Loose, textured strokes throughout and the cool-warm contrast give the composition a quiet, contemplative, workshop-like intimacy.
