About this work
An elderly, gray-haired man, nearly nude but for a loincloth, is shown crucified head-downward, his body oriented diagonally with arms bound and one hand pierced by a nail driven into the crossbeam; above him two muscular executioners lean over the structure, one hammering while blood trickles down his raised arm, and another bystander's face appears at the lower left.
The scene is built from deep black shadow pierced by a raking, theatrical light that falls across the martyr's torso, the executioners' arms, and a swath of red drapery; thick, energetic brushwork and strong tenebrism heighten the violence and physical strain of the moment.
