About this work
Tall stone townhouses with shuttered dormers rise against an almost black night sky, their windows glowing yellow and blue. At the base, striped café umbrellas shelter small seated figures at tables, and a wide flight of stone steps climbs toward a brightly lit doorway at center.
Deep blue-grey and warm ochre pastel is worked in broad, blended strokes that flatten the buildings into soft masses, with pinpoints of yellow light picking out windows and lanterns. The heavy darkness and scattered lamplight give the square a hushed, nocturnal intimacy.
