About this work
A young man with short brown hair and a thin braid is shown turned three-quarters away, gazing off to the side. Over his shoulders hangs a dark crimson garment with a fringed, tattered edge and a pale embroidered collar, its ragged straps trailing down over pale, loosely blocked-in arms and torso against an undefined grey ground.
The head is built with careful, blended modeling in warm flesh tones, while the cape and body dissolve into broad, dripping strokes of maroon and grey left visibly unresolved. This contrast between a finished face and an open, gestural body gives the study a raw, searching quality, quiet and slightly melancholic in mood.
