About this work
A young woman stands in a voluminous red skirt and jacket trimmed with black and gold stripes, a pearl necklace at her throat and a red ribbon in her hair. In one hand she holds up a pale mask with painted features on a slender stick, as though comparing it to her own face; in the other she holds a single pink rose, with more roses scattered loosely in the dark background.
The costume's saturated reds and warm ochre background are built up with visible, textured strokes, while the face and mask are painted with smoother, more delicate handling. Set against near-black shadow, the theatrical dress and blank mask give the figure a playful, faintly enigmatic, masquerade-like presence.
