Clerk

A heavyset man in a buttoned waistcoat and full-sleeved shirt bends over a tall cabinet-like structure built from open drawers and stacked cubes set at impossible angles. His head rests on his folded arm as if dozing, one hand curled beside his face on the cabinet's edge, while his legs and worn shoes trail off to one side.

Rendered entirely in graphite, the drawing builds volume through dense cross-hatching and soft shading that models the man's bulk against the sharp geometric edges of the drawers. The contrast between the sagging, tired figure and the rigid, cubist furniture gives the scene a quiet, weary strangeness.
