About this work
The composition looks straight down on a walled river town, its ochre and rose rooftops dusted with snow and clustered around a bend in the water. A pale, angular winged figure kneels in the near foreground on a rooftop, reaching one hand toward a small domed turret, as if placing or ringing something below.
Sepia, gold and grey-white tones dominate, applied in thick, plaster-like layers that give the whole scene an aged, weathered surface. The vertiginous aerial angle and the ghostly, faceless angel turn an ordinary townscape into a dreamlike vision, quiet and slightly uncanny.
