About this work
A row of tall brick and stone townhouses lines a canal at dusk, their steep gabled roofs joined by a tower topped with a spire on the right, while a dark barge or tug is moored at the quay in front of them. Warm yellow and orange window lights punctuate the otherwise darkening facades. The still water fills the lower half of the composition, mirroring the buildings and their lit windows in soft vertical streaks.
The palette is built from deep ultramarine and indigo blues set against warm ochre and amber lamplight, with pastel worked in soft, blended strokes that dissolve hard edges into atmosphere. Light comes almost entirely from the glowing interiors, creating a warm-cool contrast against the darkening sky and water. The handling produces a hushed, nocturnal calm along the waterfront.
