About this work
Within an oval frame, a single ornate object resembling a bishop or draped chess figure dominates the composition, its curling, cloak-like form set against a background broken into hard triangular and rectangular planes. Fragments of Cyrillic letters float around the edges of the oval, and no human or animal figures appear anywhere in the design.
Fine stippling and controlled hatching build a smooth tonal range from near-white paper to deep black, letting the curving, almost carved form of the piece stand out against the flat geometric background. The precise, engraving-like linework and enigmatic, puzzle-like arrangement give the print a quiet, cerebral character fitting its chess-inspired subject.
