About this work
A long facade of pale stone rises in tiers of arched windows, dormers and slender turrets topped with steep dark roofs and ornate chimneys, culminating in an elaborate central lantern tower. A curved staircase and low balustrade lead down to a wide gravel courtyard where two small figures stand near the entrance, with clipped shrubs and trees at the right edge.
The stonework is rendered in warm buff and grey tones with careful attention to the rhythm of windows and rooflines, while the sky above is loosely blended in soft blue-grey clouds. Pastel and charcoal strokes sharpen architectural edges and add fine linear detail to the turrets, giving the scene a precise, monumental calm.
