About this work
A figure is seen from behind, dark hair pulled up, in a loose white shirt with sleeves pushed back. One raised arm reaches toward the head, fingers working the tuning pegs of a cello whose dark maroon scroll rises beside the shoulder, the other arm steadying the neck below.
Warm umber and ochre strokes dominate, set against cool grey-white highlights on the shirt. Paint is laid on in broad, loaded strokes with visible ridges of impasto, giving a rapid, sketch-like energy. Soft light from the left models the shoulders while the face stays hidden, lending quiet concentration.
