About this work
Clasped hands rest beside a bare foot and leg at the center of the sheet, resting on a wooden beam that holds a curved carpentry tool with hooked claws and a long saw with jagged teeth; a small inset square at upper right shows a face with closed eyes, head tilted back, and a shallow bowl holding cutlery-like tools sits at lower right. Behind these objects, angular gable and roof shapes recede into the pale background.
Rendered entirely in graphite, the drawing builds its forms through dense, directional crosshatching that leaves broad planes of bare paper as light. The disconnected pairing of body fragments, tools and architectural shapes gives the composition a quiet, puzzling strangeness.
