About this work
A nude woman lies stretched across a rough stone ledge, seen from behind with her face hidden; her back, hip, and legs fill most of the canvas. In the upper right, a dense, encrusted patch of raised paint in ochre, white, and cobalt breaks into the dark ground like weathered rock.
Smooth, warm flesh tones against the near-black background give the figure a sculptural, marble-like quality, while the adjoining patch is built from thick, gestural impasto flecked with raw color. The contrast between polished figuration and raw texture creates a moody, enigmatic feeling, the averted pose and shadowed setting lending the scene a hushed, private atmosphere.
