About this work
An arched stone bridge spans a narrow Venetian canal, its pale balustrade lit against a dark night sky. Below, indistinct costumed figures gather near a gondola's mooring pole, and a red-and-white harlequin-patterned drape hangs at the right edge, marking the carnival crowd moving through the passage.
Cool blues and greys wash over the architecture, set alight by a single pink glow beneath the arch. Oil and pastel are scraped and dragged over the canvas board, leaving a grainy, atmospheric surface that softens every form into shadow. The mood is hushed and mysterious, a fleeting glimpse of festivity in the dark.
