About this work
A canopy of blossoming trees in full pink-lilac bloom arches over a narrow canal, meeting overhead to frame a pale strip of sky at the centre. The water runs straight back into the distance between grassy banks, catching soft reflections of the blossom and a faint warm glow near the lower left, while dark, bare branches crisscross the flowering canopy.
Thick, dabbed strokes of lavender, pink and white build the mass of blossom against patches of green and ochre foliage below, with the water rendered in loose, broken touches of grey, lilac and gold. Diffuse, soft light filters through the branches, and the loose, textured paint handling gives the scene a hazy, dreamlike softness.
