About this work
Tall ochre and brick-red tenement façades with shuttered windows rise on either side of a narrow Roman street, framing a glimpse of a white baroque church dome and lantern in the distance. Below, white umbrellas shade café tables where seated diners and passersby, some in red, animate the sunlit piazza.
Warm earth tones - ochre, terracotta, sage green - are applied in loose, confident patches that suggest crumbling plaster rather than describe every detail. Brighter touches pick out potted plants and figures, and the higher, cooler sky sets off the glowing walls, lending the scene an easy, sunstruck warmth.
