About this work
A dense cluster of dark magenta and crimson peonies dominates the upper half of the canvas, paired with looser white blossoms to the lower right. Green stems descend through the lower portion against a pale, undefined ground, with no vase or table clearly delineated, so the flowers appear to float against a soft grey-white field.
The palette is built from saturated magenta, wine-red and white, applied in thick impasto strokes with a palette knife, leaving ridges and scraped patches of raw canvas texture visible. Greens are used sparingly for stems and leaves. The heavily worked surface and lack of fine detail push the bouquet toward abstraction, giving it an intense, blooming vitality.
