About this work
A group of nude men, women and a child stand and crouch across an open, wave-patterned green ground, some facing forward, others turned away or crouching low. A central bearded man stands frontally with arms slightly spread, flanked by a standing woman holding a child's hand and other figures in muted flesh tones. Above them a plain blue sky is dominated by a dark red spiral and a streak of the same color.
The palette is limited to olive-green, ochre flesh tones and blue-grey, applied in loose transparent washes over pencil underdrawing that remains visible throughout. The rhythmic green brushstrokes suggest a churning ground or sea, while the isolated, uneasy poses of the bare figures beneath the ominous spiral create a mysterious, unsettled mood.
