About this work

Two large boat hulls tower to either side of the composition, hoisted stern-up onto wheeled wooden cradles and braced with timber props; a third, smaller boat sits further back between them on its own trailer. Seen from close behind, the curved planked hulls fill most of the frame, with only a strip of open, rutted yard and pale sky visible between them.

The etching builds the weathered wooden hulls out of dense, curving hatched lines that follow the planking and grain, contrasting with sparser, lighter marks in the sky and ground. Rope, chains and makeshift wooden struts are picked out in crisp, dark strokes. The tight framing and heavy texture give this ordinary boatyard scene an almost monumental, sculptural presence.
