About this work
A single white wooden boat with a dark red underside floats at the center of the composition, tied up with ropes and flanked by mooring buoys and another vessel in the distance. In the foreground a coiled rope and a life ring rest at the water's edge, while the boat's surface carries folded tarpaulins and dark fittings.
The entire canvas is built from broken strokes of blue, turquoise, violet, and gold that stand in for sunlit, rippling water, with the boat's white hull picking up the same reflected colors. Brushwork is loose and confident, almost mosaic-like, favoring color and light over outline. The result is a bright, sparkling impression of still water on a sunny day.
