About this work
The scene is built around the sweeping curve of a cobalt-blue iron bridge railing in the foreground, its stone piers reflected in dark canal water. Beyond it rises St. Isaac's Cathedral with its gilded dome and columned portico, flanked by a red-brick apartment building; small figures and a car move along the embankment below a tall lamppost.
Painted in loose, visible strokes, the palette sets the bridge's saturated blue against a pale grey sky and the muted ochre and rust tones of the stone and brick facades. The gold dome is picked out with warm, thick highlights that draw the eye through an otherwise soft, overcast light, giving the view a quiet, hazy calm.
