About this work

A woman with upswept hair and pearl necklaces stands in a pale silk gown trimmed with pink ruffles and bows, one hand raised with a finger extended toward a small blue bird alighting on it. Behind her, a heavy gold curtain is pulled back to reveal a flock of identical blue birds streaming in from a pale sky, against a backdrop of glowing amber drapery.

Rich gold and amber tones dominate the curtain and background, set off by the cool blue of the birds and the pale silvery-pink of the gown. The figure is rendered with smooth, polished academic technique, fine detail in the lace, pearls and hair, while the flock of birds is painted more simply and graphically. The combination gives the image a vivid, storybook enchantment.
