About this work
A pale, luminous mass sits low in the composition, its rounded, folded shape suggesting rock, foam or fallen snow amid darker green and brown surroundings reading as undergrowth or forest floor; slender dark trunks rise on either side toward a black upper register.
Thin black lines run down the entire surface like streaks of rain, breaking the greens, ochres and reds of the lower passage into a fractured, weathered surface. The heavy, crumpled paint layer catches light unevenly, and the overall tonality is dark and turbulent, giving the scene a brooding, stormy atmosphere.
