About this work
A seated female figure, her face pale and lowered, wears a bull's head as a hood, its curved horns strung with a beaded chain. She holds a small crimson-red infant-like form against her chest with both hands. Behind her a colonnaded courtyard recedes into shadow, a stone statue stands at the far left, and a white bull grazes quietly on the terrace above.
Warm ochre and umber tones dominate the architecture, softened by hazy, rubbed brushwork that blurs the ruins into an atmospheric haze, while the pale grey-blue of the woman's skin and the saturated red of the infant stand out as the only sharply modeled passages. The muted palette and averted gaze give the scene a hushed, uncanny stillness.
