About this work
A long-beaked bird stands in profile at the left of this fan-shaped plate, head raised toward a swirling, ornament-filled sky. Beside it a huge curling leaf folds across the center, trailing ribbon-like tendrils that cradle a small rosebud, while scrolling medallion motifs fill the shadowed right side.
Dense black cross-hatching builds velvety shadow against the pale paper, giving every curl of leaf and feather a carved, relief-like texture. Fine parallel lines model the forms while looser marks fill the background pattern, lending the small print a hushed, decorative mystery.
