About this work
A cluster of heavily draped, veiled figures crowd together inside a jagged, cave-like space, some pressing hands to weeping faces while others wear beast-like heads with elongated jaws and heavy-lidded eyes. Patterned headdresses and robes fill the middle ground, a boy stands apart at the right, and two faint rainbow arcs stretch between raised hands beneath a black rocky canopy above.
Executed largely in graphite, the drawing builds form through dense cross-hatching and stippled shading across intricately patterned textiles, while a few passages of pale pink and blue oil color mark the rainbow bands, the only color in an otherwise grey tonal field. The crowding of bodies and shadowed cave above create a claustrophobic, uneasy atmosphere.
