About this work
Only the lower half of a young woman's face appears, eyes half-lowered and hair a pale gold, while two large hands enter from above assembling a symmetrical structure of playing cards - diamonds, clubs, hearts - into interlocking triangles that rest directly on her head like a card castle; a small lizard and a round-topped sapling occupy the lower corners.
Mixed media on paper builds a mottled, stone-like ground of turquoise and teal streaked with ochre and rust, against which the smoothly modeled flesh tones of hands and face and the crisp blue-and-white card edges stand out sharply.
