About this work
Seven rectangular panels are stacked in a stepped grid, each isolating one animal against a flat colored ground: a golden lion on blue crowns the top row; a spotted leopard, a white peacock, and a second leopard fill the middle row on maroon and black; and a white antlered deer, a pink shrimp, and a silver fish occupy the bottom row.
Each creature is drawn in confident, graphic outline with flat local color and gold contour lines, recalling mosaic or heraldic emblem plates rather than naturalistic depiction. The saturated blues, reds, and golds and the crackled, textured surface give the series a decorative, emblematic rhythm, more a catalogue of forms than a single scene.
