About this work
The beetle is seen from above with its wing covers closed into a rounded shield, marked by vertical blue-and-cream stripes running down each side of a central seam. Paddle-tipped antennae extend upward from a spotted head and thorax, and pale legs with dark accents and clawed feet splay symmetrically outward, all set against a plain black ground.
Rows of small dark and ochre dots run along the blue stripes, giving the surface a beaded, almost embroidered quality, while the thorax is dusted with fine speckling in blue and white. Crisp edges and smooth colour transitions on the wing covers sit against drier strokes on the legs, and the dark background isolates the insect like a specimen under glass.
