About this work
Unlike the spread-winged pieces in the group, this beetle is shown with its elytra closed over its back, forming a rounded shield that tapers to a point. Curling antennae with rounded tips rise above a domed thorax, and thin jointed legs with clawed tips fold outward on either side, set against an empty black ground.
The wing covers are mottled with irregular blue blotches over a pale cream ground, giving a dappled, camouflage-like surface, while the thorax carries fine dotted texture in blue and gold. Smooth blending in the wings contrasts with looser strokes on the legs and antennae, and the dark surround makes the pale, patterned body glow softly.
